A sustainable apiary replaces its own losses. That is the whole philosophy in one sentence, and everything else in this chapter is just the woodware and the arithmetic behind it. If you buy a three-pound package or a nuc from an outside supplier every April, you are not keeping bees — you are renting a colony for a season and hoping the weather cooperates. Ownership means every yard in our operation carries more overwintered five-frame nucs than we expect to need going into spring. Those nucs are the insurance policy against winter loss, the raw material for splits, and the queen bank all in one small, cheap, five-frame box.
I did not arrive at this philosophy from a book. I arrived at it from three consecutive springs in the early 2000s where I phoned suppliers in March and heard the same answer: sold out, try again next year. A nuc you raised yourself in August never tells you that.
Why five frames, specifically
Five frames is the smallest unit that still behaves like a complete colony rather than a curiosity. It holds a laying queen, a full brood pattern across two or three frames, a frame of pollen, and a frame of capped stores — enough thermal mass for the cluster to hold 34.5°C through a cold snap without burning through its reserves in three days. Anything smaller, a three-frame nuc or a mating nuc, is a queen-rearing tool, not an overwintering unit; it simply does not carry enough bees or stores to survive a Princeton January. Anything larger and you have built a second full-size colony, which defeats the purpose — the whole point of the nuc is that it is cheap, stackable, and disposable as a unit even though the genetics inside it are not.
Bee space is not negotiable
Three-eighths of an inch — 9.5 mm, and I will accept a working range of 6 to 9 mm before the bees start treating the gap as a problem to be solved. Give them more than that and they build burr comb to close the space. Give them less and they caulk it shut with propolis, welding your equipment together by August. This one measurement, discovered by Langstroth in 1851 and unimproved upon since, is the reason movable-frame beekeeping exists at all. Every piece of woodware you build or buy — nuc boxes, migratory covers, frame rests, divider boards — is judged against that single number before anything else about it matters.
When you build your own nuc boxes, cut frame rests so the top bars sit with a consistent 9.5 mm gap to the box wall and to each other, and make sure your divider boards in double nucs hold the same spacing on both faces. A nuc box bought from three different manufacturers over three different years is the single most common source of burr comb I see in beginner operations — the frames themselves are standard, but the rabbet depth on the box is not, and the bees will tell you about it in wax within a week.

The insulated double nuc
This is the single piece of equipment that changed our winter survival numbers more than any treatment or feed regimen. A double nuc is exactly what it sounds like: one outer box, one roof, and a solid divider running the full depth down the centre, creating two independent five-frame colonies that share a wall.
- 1Build or buy two five-frame chambers separated by a full-depth solid divider board, under a single shared roof, with entrances on opposite ends of the box.
- 2Insulate the outer walls and the underside of the lid with 25 mm rigid foam housed inside a weatherproof wooden shell — the divider stays uninsulated on purpose.
- 3Each side clusters against the shared, uninsulated divider and radiates heat into its neighbour. In our yards, double-nuc wintering survival runs 15 to 25 percentage points above single five-frame nucs wintered alone in the same row.
- 4Feed both sides equally in autumn with 2:1 syrup until each frame is capped edge to edge. A light side will find any gap at the divider seam and rob its heavier neighbour blind — check the seam with a headlamp at dusk in September.
- 5In spring, split the pair's labour: one side becomes your first split of the year, drawn out into a full box on a new stand; the other rebuilds on the original stand and is fed lightly to replace the lost workforce. The double-nuc box itself never sits empty — it is immediately restocked with a new queen cell or a caught swarm.
Brood factories
A brood factory is a dedicated, strong, two-deep colony whose entire job is producing frames of open brood and young nurse bees — not honey, and not overwintering as a unit itself, though it certainly can. We run two or three of these per yard of twenty colonies. They are headed by a proven, productive queen, kept queenright and unmanaged for honey production, and raided regularly.
- Pull a frame of open brood and adhering nurse bees from the factory every seven to ten days through May and June to boost weak nucs or start a cell builder.
- Replace every frame you pull with a frame of drawn, empty comb so the queen never runs out of laying room — a brood factory that gets crowded will swarm just like any other colony.
- Feed a brood factory pollen substitute in early spring before natural pollen is reliable; nurse-bee output is capped by protein intake, not by queen fecundity.
- Never harvest honey from a true brood factory — its stores exist to buffer the repeated frame removals, and a factory run short on food will slow brood production within days.
- Requeen brood factories on a two-year cycle from your own best-performing overwintered stock, since every frame that leaves this colony carries its genetics into the rest of the operation.

The arithmetic of self-replacement
Plan for winter loss even in a good year. Our five-year average loss rate across single-story colonies and standard nucs sits between 15 and 22 percent, mostly explainable by late-season mite loads or a queen that failed silently in September. Build your nuc count against that number rather than against optimism.
If you run twenty production colonies and budget an 18 percent loss rate, you need roughly four replacement units simply to stand still. We build six to eight nucs per twenty colonies every August — the extra two or three cover a poor spring, sell to cover equipment costs, or become the following year's new brood factory. A five-frame nuc built in early August from a brood factory frame and a mated queen has, by our records, a strong-enough population and enough capped stores to survive winter roughly nine times out of ten, provided it is fed to repletion by mid-September and left alone after that.

Siting and labelling the nuc yard
Nuc yards get crowded fast, and crowded yards drift. Face entrances in different compass directions where boxes sit side by side, or stagger the row so no two entrances line up — young queens returning from mating flights are especially prone to entering the wrong box, and a drifted queen in the wrong nuc will cost you a full generation of record-keeping before you notice.
- Space nuc boxes at least 1 m apart where terrain allows, or use varied landmarks — a shrub, a painted board, a rock — every third box to aid orientation.
- Paint nuc box fronts in at least four distinct colours or patterns in a repeating sequence, never a uniform white row.
- Keep entrances reduced to the smallest opening the population supports; a small, defensible entrance also reduces drift and robbing risk in a tight yard.
- Number every box and record that number against a queen tag colour and build date the day the nuc is assembled, not later.
Reading fall condition before you bet on spring
By the second week of October, every nuc in the yard gets a final hand-lift at the rear of the box and a quick top-bar check under a headlamp if the weather allows one last look. A five-frame nuc that hefts heavy at the back, shows bees covering at least three full frames, and has capped stores visible on the outer frames is a good bet for spring. A nuc that feels light, shows bees clustered on fewer than two frames, or still has open brood this late in the season is a candidate for combining, not for wintering alone — better to fold two marginal nucs into one strong one over a sheet of newspaper than to lose both to a February cold snap.
This final check is the last LISTEN pass of the field season, and it is worth doing slowly. A nuc you save in October by combining is a nuc you do not have to rebuild from scratch in June.
