Raw & natural
Crystals are a good sign
Real raw honey crystallizes. It is one of the surest signs your honey was never heated, never fine-filtered and never over-handled. Crystals are not spoilage — honey keeps for years, crystallized or not.
Why honey crystallizes
Honey is a natural sugar solution, and glucose naturally forms crystals over time. Cool storage speeds it up. Liquid honey that never crystallizes has usually been heated or finely filtered — the very handling raw honey avoids.
Strained once, never filtered
Mark's honey passes through a strainer exactly once and is never heated. That keeps the full goodness in the jar — the natural pollen, enzymes, aroma and flavour that fine filtering and heat would strip away.
A wax swirl or a white rim
You may find small flecks of beeswax, a gentle wax swirl, or a pale white rim at the top of the jar. Those are tiny particles of comb wax, pollen and fine air bubbles rising naturally — proof the honey was left alone. All of it is natural and good to eat.
Embrace the natural way
Crystallized honey is a gift in the kitchen: it spreads like butter, never drips off the spoon, and keeps every bit of its character. Stir the white rim back in or spread it on toast — nothing needs fixing.
Prefer it liquid again?
- Set the jar in a bowl of warm water — comfortably warm to the hand, never boiling.
- Let it sit, refresh the warm water, and stir gently now and then.
- Repeat until the crystals melt. Never microwave or boil the jar: high heat damages the aroma, enzymes and flavour you paid for.

Our tallow goods start with locally sourced grass-fed beef tallow.
We use leaf and kidney suet from grass-finished cattle in the Similkameen and Nicola valleys. It is wet-rendered twice, salt-washed and filtered to 25 microns before it forms the base of our own tallow goods. Wild Healing is a separate botanical salve from Shieling Farms Botanicals; check each tin’s ingredient label.
