This chapter is the one I refer beginners back to most often, because it covers the problems every single beekeeper meets, usually in their first two seasons, usually at the worst possible time. None of these situations require panic. All of them require a correct diagnosis before you act, because the wrong fix — a new queen introduced to a laying-worker colony, an aggressive opening during a robbing spike — makes the problem worse, sometimes unrecoverably so.
Queenless or laying workers? Getting the diagnosis right
These are two different problems that look superficially similar and demand opposite responses. A colony that has recently lost its queen but still has no laying workers can often be saved with a new queen or a frame of eggs. A colony with established laying workers cannot — and this distinction is the single most consequential diagnosis in this chapter.

The mechanism behind laying workers matters for understanding why direct requeening fails. Once a colony has been queenless — and therefore without queen mandibular pheromone — for roughly two to three weeks, some workers' ovaries develop enough to begin laying unfertilized eggs, which become drones regardless of the cell size they are laid in. Once a critical mass of workers is laying, the colony's pheromone environment is saturated with worker-produced substances that mimic queen presence closely enough that a genuine introduced queen is read as an intruder and is very reliably balled and killed within hours of release, even from a slow-release cage.
Fixing a laying-worker colony
- 1Confirm the diagnosis first — multiple eggs per cell and scattered raised drone brood in worker comb, not just spotty brood, which has other causes covered later in this chapter.
- 2Option one, the shake-out: carry the entire colony fifty metres or more from its stand and shake every frame vigorously onto the ground in front of the relocated stand-less hive body. Laying workers, having never made an orientation flight, are poor fliers and largely fail to find their way back or to another colony; the flying bees that do return will drift into neighbouring queen-right colonies rather than reconstitute the laying-worker population.
- 3Option two, and generally the better use of the bees: combine the entire box over newspaper onto a strong queen-right colony below. The queen-right colony's pheromone environment and larger workforce overwhelm the laying-worker signal, and the combined population is absorbed productively rather than shaken out and lost.
- 4Do not spend money on a mated queen for a colony diagnosed as laying-worker. It is very close to guaranteed loss of that queen.
Robbing: stopping a frenzy before it takes the yard
Robbing is a dearth-driven cascade. In a nectar dearth — the gap after the main flow tapers and before autumn asters or late knapweed offer anything worthwhile — foraging bees search harder and more aggressively for any available sugar source, including a neighbouring weak colony's exposed stores. Once a handful of robbers successfully breach a weak colony's defenses, the Nasonov scent trail those robbers leave recruits more bees from their own colony, and the frenzy compounds within minutes into a scene that can strip a weak colony of its entire stores and kill its remaining bees within a single afternoon.
The tell-tale signs of robbing in progress: bees fighting and tumbling at the entrance rather than walking in calmly, a distinctive high-pitched whining roar rising from the hive, wax cappings and comb debris littering the landing board and ground in front, and robber bees flying in tight, weaving search patterns along hive seams rather than direct orientation flights.
Stopping it
- 1Reduce the threatened colony's entrance to a single bee-width immediately using an entrance reducer or a wad of grass — the smaller the defensible opening, the more effectively a handful of guards can hold it.
- 2Fit a robber screen — a mesh cone or offset-entrance device that forces all bees to detour around a maze rather than fly straight in. Residents relearn the new entrance path within a day; robbers, working from scent memory of the old entrance, largely cannot.
- 3Remove every trace of exposed comb, spilled syrup, or extraction scraps from the yard immediately — these are robbing accelerants that recruit far more bees than the original weak colony alone would attract.
- 4If a frenzy is already underway, close the threatened colony's entrance completely with wet grass or a screen for 20 to 30 minutes to break the robbers' access and let the scent trail dissipate, then reopen to a reduced entrance under close watch.
- 5Stop opening any colonies in the yard during a dearth, particularly in the warm middle hours of the afternoon — that is precisely when robbing pressure peaks and when an open hive with exposed frames becomes an irresistible target.
Spotty brood: a checklist, not a diagnosis of disease
Beginners see a spotty, irregular brood pattern and jump straight to disease. Disease is one possible cause, but it is far from the most common one, and treating for a disease that is not present wastes time while the actual cause continues. Work the checklist in order before reaching for a disease diagnosis.
- Old, failing queen — an aging queen simply runs out of stored sperm or lays inconsistently; look at her age in your records before anything else.
- Poor mating — a young queen mated in poor weather or with a limited drone population lays a spotty pattern from the start, distinguishable from a failing older queen mainly by the queen's age.
- Chilled brood — a sudden cold snap or an inspection that left brood frames exposed too long can kill patches of brood, appearing as irregular dead cells among healthy ones.
- Pesticide exposure — agricultural spray drift during bloom can present as a sudden, sharp spotty pattern appearing within days, often alongside dead bees at the entrance.
- Varroa and associated viruses — genuinely disease-related spotty brood, often with a distinctive uneven, 'shotgun' pattern, sunken or perforated cappings, and other varroa signs present alongside it. Cross-reference with your most recent alcohol wash count before concluding this is the cause.
- American or European foulbrood — the least common cause statistically but the most serious; confirm or rule out with a smell test (sour, glue-pot odour for AFB), a matchstick rope test on suspect larvae, and if in doubt, a lab sample submitted through your provincial apiculturist before any other action.
Bait hives: putting swarms to work for you
A percentage of every season's swarms — yours or a neighbour's — can be captured productively with a properly baited swarm trap rather than lost to a tree cavity or a chimney. This is free stock, already selected by the act of swarming for a queen vigorous enough to lead a reproductive event, and it costs almost nothing to set up.
- 1Use a single deep box (roughly 40 litre volume) with one or two frames of old drawn comb inside — scout bees strongly prefer a cavity of this volume that already smells of prior bee occupation over an empty box of any size.
- 2Add a lure: a few drops of lemongrass oil on a cotton ball, or a commercial swarm lure, placed inside near the entrance. Lemongrass oil mimics the Nasonov orientation pheromone that scout bees use to evaluate a cavity.
- 3Site the trap 3 to 5 metres off the ground where practical, in partial shade, near a forest edge or hedgerow rather than in the open — this matches the cavity height and cover scout bees naturally favour.
- 4Check traps every 5 to 7 days during peak swarm season (typically late May through June in the Similkameen, following saskatoon and choke cherry bloom).
- 5Once occupied, wait until evening when the full swarm has settled, then close the entrance, transport gently, and hive the swarm onto standard equipment within 24 to 48 hours, feeding lightly to support comb-building.
The Lazy Beekeeper principle
Every one of the problems in this chapter shares a root cause worth naming directly: intervention that outpaces necessity. Every opening of a colony costs it measurable time and resources recovering thermal regulation and pheromone distribution — by some estimates, a full brood-nest opening can take a colony the better part of a day to fully re-stabilize internal temperature and humidity. A beekeeper who opens every colony every week, out of habit or anxiety rather than a specific question needing an answer, is imposing a real, cumulative cost on colony productivity.
The discipline is this: before lighting the smoker, name the specific question you are opening the colony to answer. Is the queen laying well? Is there swarm pressure? What is the mite count? Answer that question in the minimum number of frames pulled, then close up. Do not use an inspection as an excuse to look at every frame simply because the box is already open.

Level-specific practice
None of the situations in this chapter are rare. Every beekeeper meets queenlessness, robbing, and spotty brood within their first few seasons, often more than once. What separates a manageable event from a lost colony is almost always the speed and accuracy of the diagnosis, not the sophistication of the fix. Learn to read the signs correctly, act with the minimum necessary intervention, and trust the newspaper combine more than you trust a new queen cage.
