Queen
16 days
Graft day 0 → capped day 5 → move cells day 10 → emerge day 12 → mating flights from day 17 → laying day 21–24.
Worker
21 days
Varroa prefer the 12-day capped stage; the 24-hour graft window and the 9-day post-capping mite cycle both key off it.
Drone
24 days
Longest capped stage means highest mite preference — the basis of drone-brood trapping and of drone saturation in a closed mating population.

Nurse bee — glands at peak, feeds larvae and the queen.

Count backwards from what you see: eggs mean the queen laid within 3 days; capped worker brood means she was laying at least 9 days ago.

Reading mode
Queen rearing sounds advanced until it becomes a calendar. It is not a mystical skill reserved for commercial outfits — it is a sequence of dates, each with one job, done on schedule. Below is the exact chronology we teach in the Tier 2 Hive Awakening workshop, built on Michael Palmer's closed-loop system and adapted to our Similkameen bloom windows. Every operation that raises its own queens stops being dependent on a supplier's shipping schedule, a supplier's genetics, or a supplier's mite load riding in the mail with the bees.

Why closed-loop instead of buying queens
A purchased queen is a genetic unknown shipped from a climate that is not yours, mated to drones you never selected, and often carrying a mite and disease history you cannot audit. A home-raised queen is the daughter of a breeder you scored yourself against the 3H Standard, mated to drones from your own strongest colonies, acclimated from the egg to Similkameen winters. Closed-loop rearing also means the operation never runs short: a bad spring for a commercial queen breeder in California does not become a bad spring for you.
- You control selection pressure — mite resistance, temperament, honey production, wintering — instead of inheriting someone else's breeding priorities.
- You control timing — cells are ready when your nucs and splits need them, not when a supplier's truck arrives.
- You control biosecurity — no imported colonies means no imported small hive beetle, no surprise virus loads, no unfamiliar mite phenotypes.
- You build a queen bank as insurance, so a failed mating or a superseded queen in July does not cost you the rest of the season.
